Mental health employee resource groups (ERGs) are an emerging trend among leading companies, with the potential to make significant progress in reducing stigma in the workplace. With 84% of employees having experienced symptoms of poor mental health at work and 69% of employees hiding their condition from coworkers, mental health and stigma is an increasingly visible priority for companies.
In our article on Thrive Global, we discuss how mental health-related ERGs are an effective resource that reduces mental health-related stigma through an evidence-based model of social contact, peer support, and education. In fact, supporting mental health at work has been shown to translate $4 in benefits to the company for every $1 invested. Employees can feel less alone, connected to a community, and realize that there are other, high-performing professionals who share a common experience. Mental health ERGs can also be a catalyst for organization-wide change and advocacy. Ultimately, mental healths ERGs can provide an invaluable resource for both employees’ and a company’s overall health.
Mental health ERGs are just emerging at leading companies. We compiled an ongoing list of existing ERGs in the U.S. that were either formed exclusively for mental health at work or incorporate mental health into their mission and activities. As new groups are formed or discovered, we will update this list to reflect the landscape of mental health ERGs as a resource for company leaders and change-makers.
